Jesus Christ, that cuts close to the bone.

I’ve never seen that before, and before consulting Wikipedia, I honestly didn’t know Ellison was Jewish. Then I watched it and was like “nah, man, that fucker sees things too clearly.”

Real talk: I’m a lil drunk, but you can spot a fucker who had given thought to almost being wiped out from a mile away. That fucks with you real good and it makes you give zero fucks.

I never thought about interviews in promotion of a movie or show.  I always thought the actors, producers, whatever were being paid as part of a package deal to promote the project.  Although I would have thought you’d be paid for it up front at the time it was done, rather than later when it’s pulled out of the archives for a DVD.

Oh, fuck. I’m in E urope and didn’t hear this.

This guy is hands down my favorite sci-fi writer and in my top ten overall. Shit.

That clip is classic. I think about it often... because it goddamn applies.

Platitudes, platitudes, etc. I’m gonna go take a walk.

It all depends on what you’re contracted to do.

Given he’s a writer, he was probably only ever contracted to write. If they interviewed him, they probably paid him for the interview when that was made. But if they didn’t negotiate for perpetual rights to the interview, they would have had to ask him for permission to reuse the interview later.

As for actors, a lot of them are contractually obligated to do publicity for the movie they’re in. This is why sometimes actors seem to give no fucks, or look genuinely miserable when appearing on the red carpet or on late night TV. They have to do it, even it turned out the movie was a disaster and they want to forget it even happened.

So it’s all about what the contract was.  One would think the studio would have thought about how long the rights to the interview would last when they made it.  Ellison makes it sound like he never got paid for it.  He probably shouldn’t have given it if he wasn’t.

There is also a chance he did a free interview, with the understanding that it was going to be aired once, or maybe just made for private use. If somebody then wanted to use that interview on a DVD (ie, reproduce it thousands of times to make money off of it) , then they’d have to negotiate with him for its use.

Yes. That makes sense. Regardless, t he studio knew they had to call him. So whatever the contract terms were, they weren’t for unlimited use.  The studio was calling for a freebie.

Basically. This kind of thing happens all the time.
